THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC CONTEXT OF NIAGUE PEULH

NIAGUE PEULH

Niague Peulh is a village of about 1,800 inhabitants located 40 km northeast of Dakar, near Lac Rose.

As its name suggests, this village is mainly populated by families from the Fulani ethnic group. This ethnic group practiced nomadic cow breeding. These families settled down but kept their customs and traditions.

There are therefore many breeders and a few farmers, but the men also work as masons, day laborers, laborers, drivers ... when the opportunity arises. The women are stay-at-home mothers, linen maids or run a small itinerant trade.

The village has a few shops and a small market; we find there what is necessary for daily life. The larger and better stocked village of Niaga is 3 km away. This is where the nearest health post is located.

Traditionally, children attended the Koranic school (religious education) rather than the "French" school. The population is therefore largely illiterate, speaking little French.

A traditional way of life and a lack of education mean that adults have little access to gainful employment. Families are destitute and young people struggle to enter the modernity to which they aspire.

Public schools and kindergartens therefore have an essential role to play with the younger generations. There is no public kindergarten in this village.
